Coriander Coconut Chutney / Kothamalli Thengai Thogayal

Coriander coconut chutney is a delicious and healthy preparation that can be used as a spread or dip for Dosa, idli, rice, bread etc. It goes well with hot rice, just mix it with cooked rice and have it with appalam/papads, it will be just divine. I have previously posted a version of coriander chutney with dry red chillies check out that too if interested. This chutney has a rich flavor and is so delicious due to the addition of coconut. Coriander helps to control hair loss and increases the blood content due to its rich iron content. It is a must for anemic patients especially kids and women. This chutney can be given to people who have a very bad appetite. I have stated some of its health benefits in the other coriander chutney post check it out too. Lets see what's required and how to make this healthy dip.

INGREDIENTS

(Serves 6)
  1. Coriander - 1 bunch
  2. Coconut - 1/2 of a small coconut
  3. Green chillies - 3
  4. Ginger - 1 inch long piece
  5. Garlic - 4 pods
  6. Tamarind - A small gooseberry sized ball
  7. Skinned black gram / Urad dal - 1/4 spoon
  8. Mustard - 1/4 spoon
  9. Salt  - As per taste
  10. Oil - 3 spoons

PREPARATION METHOD

  • Wash coriander well and chop of the roots and set aside.
  • Put all the ingredients in a blender (except oil, mustard and urad dal) and blend well.
  • Then heat a wok/pan add oil and add mustard seeds and let it splutter, then add urad dal and saute until it turns golden brown.
  • Then add the blended mixture into the pan and stir well for 2 minutes on low flame.
  • Remove from flame and serve.

TIP 1: Do not over cook the chutney just a 2 minutes stirring on low flame will be enough.

TIP 2: Add tamarind according to your wish if you find that its too sour then add some more coconut pieces to balance the taste.

TIP 3: Since you are adding coconut the quantity will be more and the above measurement can serve 6 to 8 people so reduce according to the quantity you want.

TIP 4: You can also use stem of the coriander for making this chutney. But be sure to wash away the mud present on it.

TIP 5: Don't wash after chopping you will lose the minerals and nutrients while doing so. So always wash and then chop coriander leaves. Use fresh coriander for best flavor and aroma.
